Symbolism of the Dog

The dog is the guide to the underworld. In Egyptian mythology, the god of the underworld, Anubis, is a dog (a jackal) and in Greek mythology, the dog Cerberus is the guard of the underworld. He guards the treasure from the unconscious. In fairy tales, the dog symbolizes human instinct. In general, the dog bears very positive meaning. He is man’s loyal friend who will help him with the unconscious (underworld) struggles. Therefore, the dog is the bringer of eternal life. He is also linked to the Greek god of healing, Aesculapius. But the dog is not just linked to healing and health, also to decease, since he can carry along dangerous deceases.
